The first attached is a photo from the Serengeti Plains, Tanganyika, (now Tanzania) in 1959. It shows me and my biologist, conservationist wife, Marty, a wildebeest we have immobilized for samples and to mark for continuing study, and our Land Rover. We were undertaking the pioneering ecosystem research in the Serengeti-Mara Plains of East Africa. In the late 1950s and early 1960s we spent about 6 years on safari in the field, living in a tent and moving around our roughly 16,000 square mile research area in the Land Rover and occasionally a small plane.
